Spoons

Every whittlers first project! Spoons are a great way to learn how to use a knife for carving safely and effectively. It is also a great use for wood that would otherwise end up on the fire. Small branchwood is best for whittling spoons and you soon develop an eye for branches that have a spoon waiting to be "liberated"!

Currently all of my spoons are handcarved using an axe (not always necessary or safe), a knife and a spoonknife. In the future I hope to be able to produce spoons using a pole lathe.

The examples in the photographs below are spoons that I use myself when I go "bush". As all the spoons I make are "users" I tend to finish, if not the whole spoon but certainly the bowl with sandpaper. The last thing you want when tucking into your beans is a splinter in your tongue! Once sanded the spoons are oiled. I normally use sunflower oil for my spoons just incase the recipient is allergic to nuts.
