Currently all of my bowls are hancarved using an adze, an axe, a trogrunner and a drawknife. In the future I hope to be able to turn bowls using a modified pole lathe.
The example in the photographs below is a Dough Bowl. As with all of my woodwork the finished item is oiled. My own preference is for walnut oil as it drys to leave a slight "shell" on the wood. Recently I have been using a foodsafe beeswax. This is a blend of foodsafe mineral oils and creamed beeswax. It leaves a lovely soft finish on the piece and leaves a honey-like aroma!
I prefer to leave my bowls un-sanded with the "tool marks" still visible. These are rustic items after all! |
